Counseling Philosophy
I believe psychotherapy is an exploration towards self-discovery and personal growth. The therapeutic environment I strive towards is one conducive to reflection, insight, and personal transformation for patients. My practice is geared towards patients who are not only in search of healing and coping strategies but also those who are on a path to self-discovery and seeking to live a life that is true to their innermost selves. In my practice, I combine cognitive-behavioral, transpersonal, and person-centered methods. This approach is evidence-based and tailored to individual needs. I focus on understanding each patient’s unique story and adapting techniques accordingly.
Education & Work Experience
With the knowledge and experience I’ve gained, I’m dedicated to supporting your mental health. Here’s a glimpse into my journey and areas of interest: My education has given me a holistic view of health, understanding both the mind and body’s roles in well-being. Nutrition was my first area of interest – I completed a bachelors of Science (also from Wayne State) in Nutrition and Food Science. I worked as a dietetic technician for aa couple of years at University of Michigan Medical Center. Afterwards, I went to Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. As a medical student, I learned this was not my path, but better came to understand how mental health is just as important as physical health. I withdrew from medical school to pursue a focus on mental health.
I completed my mental health training at Wayne State University, earning a PhD in Counselor Education and an MA in Community Counseling. Throughout this training I incorporated previous experiences – completed a masters thesis on how nutrition can be used as a supplement to support mental health & PhD research explored the bi-directional relationship between sleep and stress. These experiences further deepening my insight of the relationship between mental and physical well-being.
For over a decade, I’ve guided college students in enhancing their learning and overall well-being, working individually, in groups, and through workshops. I incorporated my science background into this work – emphasizing the science underlying the learning process. In addition, I also incorporated my knowledge of mental and physical health – for example in workshop presentations focusing on the impact of nutrition, sleep, and mental health on the learning process.
As a clinical supervisor at the Wayne State Mental Health and Wellness Clinic, I’ve supervised graduate-level counseling students for over five years. I have taught several graduate-level courses at Wayne State within the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, including trauma, diversity, sexuality, and practicum (clinical course).
